"Malapit na, oh, kay lapit na
Ng 'yong bukang-liwayway
'Di matahimik, nananabik na sa iyong pagdating
Ganda mo'y malapit nang masilip
'Wag ka na sanang maiinip
'Pagkat malapit na, oh, kay lapit na
Ng 'yong bukang-liwayway."
Inspired by Celeste Legaspi’s timeless song written by Dennis Garica, Bukang Liwayway draws on the imagery of dawn—the quiet yet powerful moment when darkness yields to light. It is a metaphor for beginnings, renewal, and the unyielding resilience of the Filipino spirit.
In the Filipino consciousness, the bukang-liwayway is more than a time of day; it is a symbol of hope after hardship, of patience rewarded, and of beauty emerging from struggle. This exhibition gathers Filipiñana-themed artworks—paintings, textiles, and mixed media—that pay homage to our nation’s rich history, traditions, and collective memory.
The works on view weave together the colors, textures, and narratives that define our cultural heritage, while looking toward the promise of tomorrow. They stand as reminders that even in the most uncertain of times, there is always a horizon waiting to be lit.
Bukang Liwayway is both a celebration and a call—to honor where we have been, to endure the present with courage, and to welcome the light that is surely coming.
